A graphic designer by trade, inventor by observation, and entrepreneur by hard work… Susan Bee Walker is owner of Susan Bee Goods LLC and inventor of Peepsnake® The Smart Phone Scarf.
Fall 2010, juggling phone, keys, and lip balm on a soccer field, I was trying to take a picture of my four-year old playing in his first game. I dropped everything in the MUD!! I thought “There’s gotta be a better way.” I didn’t want to lug a purse around the soccer field, but I did want a way to carry and use my phone. What was a way to worry less about dropping, losing, or leaving my phone behind? How could I avoid having to drag my phone and other essentials in and out of pants or jacket pockets but be hands-free? I needed to have my phone with me, but was there a way to have better accessibility, security, and convenience?
Moving along raising and organizing kids, and devoted to my iPhone to keep it all going, I started altering my accessories to fit my own dirt-free needs. Serendipitously, my husband said, “You do realize that is how new products are born? If you have a problem, chances are other people share the same problem.”
After thousands of hours of research and development (using friends, colleagues, and Google for advice), making my own prototype (I taught myself to use a sewing machine from barely knowing how to sew on a button), writing and illustrating my first patent, and catching on to the ‘trade talk’ in manufacturing so I could arrive with a top-quality finished product… My new Peepsnake® brand launched The Smart Phone Scarf in Fall 2012, just in time for the holiday season.
After enjoying six years of amazing press shoutouts, selling it live on-air QVC, and being invited to be an Amazon Prime distributor, I am excited to say our next step is… graduating to college in Fall 2018. We licensed our patented and stadium approved phone scarf to Emerson Street Clothing Co. who is the leading source for “on-trend Missy Fit” collegiate wear. Go (insert favorite team name here)!!
The inventor’s dream… I received my first royalty check! What am I going to do next? I loved creating, designing, marketing, and moving my idea forward, and now I want to share and help YOU! I’m compiling what I learned and observed as I balanced on my own product development path. If you want to follow along, join my conversation below. Let me know if I can help you in your journey.
